β· Your Recipe Collection
Your saved recipes will appear here. Add or import a recipe to get started.
β Help, Hints & Tips
Adjust the text size anywhere: use the Aβ and A+ buttons at the top of the app. Choose Reset to return to normal. Your choice is saved on this device.
Easy-to-follow instructions for using My Kitchen Companion on Android and Windows.
π Change text size
- Find Text size at the top of the screen.
- Press A+ to make writing larger, or Aβ to make it smaller.
- Choose Reset to return to the original size.
- The setting applies to recipes, shopping lists, meal planning, forms and Help & Tips.
Tip: Your chosen size is remembered on this device. You can also use your browserβs zoom or accessibility settings.
π Getting started
- Open My Recipes to see your collection.
- Select Add Recipe and enter a name, ingredients and cooking instructions.
- Put each instruction on a separate line to make steps easy to follow on a phone.
- Save your recipe, then open it to use the step-by-step reader.
- Export a backup after adding your first recipes.
Tip: Start with two or three favourites so you can practise before importing your whole collection.
β Add, edit and customise recipes
- Choose Add Recipe and fill in the recipe name and ingredients.
- Add instructions, one step per line, and optionally a photograph, category and source.
- Save. To change a saved recipe, open it and choose Edit.
- To keep the original unchanged, choose Save as My Version from its recipe details.
Tip: Include specific oven temperatures, times and serving quantities in your instructions.
π Import from websites and social media
- Open Import and paste the recipe website address.
- Try automatic import. The PHP importer can read structured recipe data from many public websites; some sites still block automated access.
- For Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest, save the original link and paste any available caption or ingredients.
- Review and correct all ingredients and instructions before saving.
A video link alone cannot guarantee the app can extract its full recipe. Private posts and platform restrictions may prevent import.
π· Scan cookbook pages or handwritten recipes
- Open Cooking Studio and find the photo/text capture tools.
- Select a clear, well-lit photo of the recipe.
- If your browser supports text recognition, try extracting the text. Otherwise type or paste the recipe manually.
- Check quantities, temperatures and spelling carefully, especially handwriting.
Tip: Photograph one page at a time, straight on, with no shadows.
π± Read recipes and use Cooking Mode
- Open a recipe from My Recipes.
- Select One step at a time to concentrate on a single instruction.
- Use Next step and Previous to move through the method.
- Select Larger text if needed.
- For the ingredient checklist and optional screen-awake control, open Cooking Studio.
Tip: Screen-awake mode depends on browser support and may stop when the phone locks.
βοΈ Australian metric conversion and servings
- Open Converter.
- Enter the quantity and choose the original unit.
- Read the converted Australian measurement.
- On a recipe, change the serving count to scale supported ingredient quantities.
Australian tablespoons are 20 mL; US tablespoons are about 15 mL. Cups of different ingredients do not all weigh the same. Check fan-forced versus conventional oven settings.
π₯ Dietary requirements and nutrition
- When editing a recipe, select appropriate dietary labels.
- In My Recipes, open Dietary requirements and tick one or more filters.
- Use Cooking Studio to record nutritional values when you have reliable figures.
Dietary labels and nutritional values are not independently verified. Check packaged ingredients, allergens, cross-contact and serving sizes; diabetes-friendly is not a medical guarantee.
ποΈ Weekly meal planner
- Open Planner & Pantry.
- Choose the week, then select recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.
- Move to the previous or following week using the week controls.
- Print your plan or add planned ingredients to your shopping list.
Tip: Plan a leftover meal after a large batch-cooking day.
π Shopping lists and pantry matching
- Open a recipe and choose the option to add its ingredients to your shopping list.
- Open Shopping List to tick off purchased items or add extra items.
- Use Cooking Studio's ingredient consolidation tools when needed.
- Open Planner & Pantry to enter what you already have and look for matching recipes.
Tip: Combined quantities and pantry matches are approximate; check units and package sizes before shopping.
π² Substitutions, leftovers and family recipes
- Open Cooking Studio for substitution notes, leftovers/freezer notes and family history.
- Record what you changed, whether it worked, and how you would cook it next time.
- Use Save as My Version to keep a separate adapted recipe.
- Keep the original recipe source and author details with your copy.
Tip: Mark freezer containers with the dish name and freezing date.
π Print and create your own cookbook
- Open a recipe and select Print to print or save that recipe as a PDF.
- In Cooking Studio, use the printable cookbook creator to select recipes.
- In your browser's print window, choose a printer or Save as PDF.
Tip: Preview the pages before printing to check photo sizes and page breaks.
βοΈ Cloud storage: Off, Manual or Automatic
- Open Backup & Sync.
- Choose Off to keep cloud storage disabled (the default).
- Choose Manual to upload or download a cloud snapshot only when you request it.
- Choose Automatic to check for local changes and upload periodically while the app is open, after successful cloud setup and initial upload.
- Cloud storage requires a correctly secured HTTPS PHP endpoint and private token.
Automatic mode is backup, not automatic two-way sync. Changes from another device must be downloaded and restored manually. If a conflict is detected, automatic uploads pause.
πΎ Back up, restore and move to another device
- Open Backup & Sync and download a full JSON backup.
- Also export the additional Cooking Studio notes backup if you use those features.
- Copy the files to a safe location, separate from your device.
- On the other device, use the restore controls to import your backups.
- Check that recipes, photos and notes are present before deleting old copies.
Restoring a backup can replace the current collection. Always export the current collection first. Browser storage can be cleared, so keep independent backups.
π οΈ Troubleshooting
Recipe missing? Check your search, category and dietary filters, and Recently Deleted.
Import not working? The site may block access. Paste the text manually and save the source link.
Cloud backup not working? Confirm HTTPS, server endpoint, token, hosting permissions and selected cloud mode.
App looks outdated? Close and reopen the app; when hosted, browser caching may delay an update.
Recipes not appearing on another device? Offline browser storage is device-specific. Transfer a backup or manually restore a cloud snapshot.
π₯ Dietary requirements β filter recipes
Select multiple requirements. Only recipes you have labelled with every selected requirement will appear. Tags are not independently verified.
Add a Recipe
Import recipes from different sources into My Kitchen Companion. Choose an option below.
More import options (browser extension or manual entry)
Import from Browser Extension
On a recipe website, click the Send to My Kitchen Companion extension in Edge. Then return here and select the button below.
Enter the recipe link in the compact bar above.
For automatic imports from websites, the Edge extension may be required when opening index.html locally.
File or Image
Select one or more recipe photos, screenshots or documents from your computer.
No files selected.
No image selected. Choose a file above to enable the buttons.
Choose an image, then select Continue with Selected Image to attach it to a new recipe. Add the ingredients and instructions, then select Save Recipe. Text recognition requires an internet connection to load the recognition engine the first time. Check the text carefully before saving.
Import recipe documents
Supports PDF, Word DOCX, and plain text TXT. Choose one or several documents, then select Read Selected Documents. Scanned PDFs may need text recognition and internet access.
No documents selected.
For a saved My Kitchen Companion JSON backup, use Settings β Restore Backup, not this recipe document importer. Older Word DOC files must first be saved as DOCX or PDF.
Direct website extraction requires PHP hosting; when opening index.html locally, use the Edge extension for website recipes. Photos are saved with recipes for offline viewing. Some sites still block automated access. Private posts, video-only recipes and restricted pages cannot be reliably imported. You can always save the original link and edit the recipe yourself.
Shopping List
Tick ingredients as you shop. Add items from any saved recipe.
Australian Kitchen Converter
Australian cups are 250 mL and Australian tablespoons are 20 mL.
Cup-to-gram conversions depend on the ingredient and packing method. Ingredient weights are estimates; a kitchen scale is best for baking.
Weekly Meal Planner
Plan breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks for each day. Move between weeks and add the selected recipes to your shopping list.
My Pantry
Keep a simple list of ingredients you have at home.
Recipes matching pantry ingredients
Cooking Timer
Keep the app open for timer alerts. Background notifications are not guaranteed.
Recently Deleted Recipes
Restore recipes deleted from this device.
Cooking Studio
Cooking mode, ingredient substitutions, nutrition notes, family history, leftovers and cookbook printing.
Scan a recipe page
Choose a photograph or screenshot. On supported browsers, local text recognition may be available; otherwise attach the image and transcribe or paste the recipe manually. Handwriting recognition may be unreliable.
Intelligent Shopping List
Combine identical ingredient lines, with pantry items shown separately for review.
Cookbook Creator
Select recipes to include in a printable cookbook. Use Print β Save as PDF for a digital copy.
Choose your page size, then create the cookbook. In the print window choose Save as PDF or your printer.
Backup, Restore & Devices
Offline mode: Your recipes are saved in this browser on this device. You can view and edit them without internet after loading the app. Browser storage can be cleared, so back up regularly.
A backup contains recipe photos, shopping items and recipes. Transfer the backup to another device and restore it there. Restoring replaces the current collection after confirmation.
Cloud storage and backup choices
Cloud storage is optional. Choose Off, Manual, or Automatic cloud backup below. Automatic mode protects against remote changes but does not merge recipes or silently replace your local collection.
Install on your device
When hosted over HTTPS, use your browser's Install app or Add to Home screen menu. For offline availability, open it once while connected. Opening the HTML file directly also works for basic use, but installation and offline caching require HTTPS hosting.
Optional private cloud sync
Requires installing the included PHP server file on your own HTTPS hosting and configuring a strong private sync token. No cloud service is connected by default. Synchronisation uses whole-library snapshots; when both devices have changed, download a backup and resolve differences before replacing either copy.
For privacy, the token is held only for this browser session. Cloud sync is opt-in; it is not an automatic background service. Always download backups before synchronising.
